8in8in8: The 2009 Challenge

Wow, this is going to be fun! The eight highest peaks in the eight Australian states and territories... in eight months. 15 000 kilometres with no motors, just a bicycle, a kayak and a pair of boots. That's the adventure for Expeditionclass in 2009. The challenge for students is to dive into the journey and learn about Australian geography. Find out more about the peaks and the madcap plan that connects them.

Mt Meharry Animal Pose- Your Help Needed!!!

Go to the forum now and suggest an animal found in Western Australia that I can pose as on the summit of Mt Meharry. Please include a brief description so I don't look like a Crusty-eyed Lobster when I'm supposed to be a Turbo-charged Glider Possum.

Daily Dispatch

4 July 2009- Auski Roadhouse
Distance: 90 km

Word of the day: Temperature (Does anyone know what temperature water freezes at?)
I love the Pilbara. The colours in the rocks (red), the grass (lime green to yellow) and the sky (blue to pink) are incredible. The only time that it's not stupendous is around lunchtime when the glare from the road and heat bouncing off the rocks gets too much. Then it's time to sit under a tree with plenty of leaves and stay nice and still. Not that the temperature is very high at the moment. In summer this area is about as hot as it gets in Australia. Nearby Marble Bar is known for recording the highest ever temperature- can you find out what it was? Towards the end of today I was riding towards the Hamersley Range but stopped short at the roadhouse. Just 70 km down the road (and over the range) is Mt Meharry. I might make it to the summit tomorrow but I reckon the day after is more likely. Read older dispatches...

Adventure Learners

This journey will take us from the southern extremes in Tasmania, across the treacherous Bass Strait, through the alpine mountains in Victoria and New South Wales, right up to the tropical north where crocodiles and snakes abound. If we're going to meet the challenges of this expedition we'll need to find out more about the places we cycle through, climb up and paddle across. That's where you can help! Join the forum and share your ideas and what you're learning in class. Contribute to the Learning ZONE where your knowledge will be posted for eternity. Australian geography is NOT boring, it's just massive!
